Afghan Rulers Utilized Abandoned UK Gear to Track Down Afghans Who Worked With Western Forces, Inquiry Hears

A confidential source has told a parliamentary probe that British authorities abandoned classified technology allowing Afghanistan's rulers to identify local individuals who collaborated with allied troops.

Data Breach Endangers Thousands at Risk

The source, called Person A, stated that Afghans affected by the security lapse were advised to relocate and change their contact details to avoid detection from militant forces.

Lawmakers are currently examining official management of a massive breach of confidential data involving approximately 19k individuals who had applied to move to Britain to flee the Taliban.

The Information Breach Happened

An electronic document containing confidential details, such as identities, phone numbers and occasionally relative details, was inadvertently disclosed by a staff member stationed at British military command in February 2022.

The breach came to light in late 2023, when details of multiple applicants who had sought to settle in Britain were posted on Facebook.

Taliban Capabilities

Many believe there's this misconception that the Taliban are without comparable resources that allied forces use,” Person A informed MPs.

“We left it all behind in Afghanistan; they possess it. Once they acquire a contact number, they can trace you down to within metres. This is exactly how specialized teams did.”

During testimony about whether the Taliban possessed necessary encryption, Person A confirmed: “They've got everything.”

Impact of the Security Lapse

Preliminary research presented to the committee estimated that at least 49 kin and co-workers of Afghans affected by the breach had been executed.

A legal restriction concerning the incident was implemented in last year and prevented relevant facts concerning it from public disclosure until July 2025.

Protective Actions

Due to legal constraints, Person A and the non-governmental organization associated with told affected households they were working with that they had “concerns that certain devices had been breached”.

“Our suggestion was that they change residence if they could and changed their phone numbers. Those were the two main details that, if authorities acquired such data, would cause them being traced,” the source testified.

Challenged Assessments

The source disputed that an official review performed by a former official had been wrong to conclude that the possession of the records by the regime was “not significantly alter present danger”.

“The important fact is that these individuals are not standing up to the authorities; they are in hiding. Everything boils down to past work history.”

Person A described terrible treatment suffered by concerned people, involving electric shock torture, waterboarding, and violent assaults.

“We have had four-year-old children who have had bones crushed to pressure the family to reveal locations,” she testified.
