Antony Price, Renowned for Creating Looks for David Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
Antony Price, the groundbreaking British fashion designer who crafted many legendary styles favored by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has died at 80 years old.
He was celebrated for his architectural shapes and performative fashion, including the soft-colored suits that featured in rock band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "their hit Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."
His passing follows just weeks after he debuted his most recent collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. The performer Lily Allen showcased a dress evoking the notorious black velvet "revenge dress" once worn by the late Princess Diana.
A Pioneering Career
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price relocated to London at the start of the 1960s to enroll at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he started his work in clothing for men at the company Stirling Copper and was responsible for the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger famously wore during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show featured as its opener outfits on supermodel Jerry Hall, who also wore the marriage dress Price created for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A long-time collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the memorable jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to merge menswear and womenswear along with his technical proficiency in shaping form-fitting garments cemented his status as a "true original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
By the 1990s, he started creating outfits for Camilla, now Queen Consort, which included a number of outfits for her American tour after assuming the title.
After a career spanning over fifty years, Price presented his final runway show in London recently in collaboration with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
- Sculpted Silhouettes: A hallmark of his work.
- Theatrical Flair: Defining an era of music fashion.
- Genre-Blending Design: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
- Working with Stars and Royalty: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.
Design circles mourns the loss to a true visionary whose impact on fashion and music remains indelibly etched.
