Are You Able to Crack This? That Forgotten Netherlands Creation That Forged the Contemporary Globe
One can find numerous contenders for the designation as “planet’s most significant invention.” The circular axle. The movable type. The combustion motor.
As per a new book, however, that honor belongs to the mechanised sawmill invented through Dutchman Corneliszoon van Uitgeest in 1593.
“Prior to automated cutting, constructing a modest trading ship required approximately ten sawyers laboring for three months,” writes Jaime Dávila. “With wind-powered sawmills, an identical amount of cut lumber might be produced within seven days.”
Thanks to this rapid mechanical cutter, which turned logs into boards with almost no manual labor, Dutch builders were able to build vessels more quickly than anyone else, an advantage that unleashed a century of Netherlands naval, financial as well as cultural dominance across Europe and the world.
The Original True Manufacturing Device
The inventor's sawmill, argues Dávila, was “mankind’s initial true factory machine.” A windmill rotated a wheel. One component converted its rotary movement into up-and-down motion for the saw. A separate mechanism changed the rotary motion into a sideway’s movement advancing the log to the cutter. A ratchet system moved the log ahead one precise increment each stroke.
“Each element seemed modest by itself. Corneliszoon’s brilliance lay in how to combine these parts in order that the machine acted within a precisely synchronized order, sawing on every downward motion and moving with each return stroke. This constituted an astonishingly intelligent use of fundamental parts.”
