The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was sentenced of planning a military coup in the ninth month and handed more than a 27-year term in jail, but he continued under confinement pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after recent developments were revealed.

This encompassed seeking to disable his tracking device and a summons to a demonstration that could enable a chance to flee".
