Boxing is in a significant decline this year, with limited compelling matchups and far less thrilling fights than normal. The possibility of a high-stakes and fascinating heavyweight battle between Parker and Fabio Wardley at the iconic O₂ Arena brings a measure of relief to the struggling sport. The last man standing will almost certainly face Oleksandr Usyk next year. In stark contrast, the defeated fighter is expected to regret the unavoidable deterioration of their hard-won plaudits.

Parker finds himself on a impressive streak since his previous loss to fighter Joe Joyce three years in the past. “This is the biggest bout, right now, in the heavyweight class. These two guys have stepped up when neither fighter was required to take this bout. Parker is the WBO interim champion and they have previously mandated the champion to fight him, but he was injured. Joseph wants to fight anyway.

“Fabio is similarly well-placed and he could have just waited for his opportunity. He said ‘No.’ He wanted to fight – and against Parker because it gives him a chance to skip the line.”

Parker’s Perspective

Parker, set to be 34 in January, said: “It's win or go home. I am not thinking about losing. I honor my adversary and what he has done and his preparation for this bout. But I am on a different level and I am going to show it on the day of the bout.”

Wardley’s Outlook

Wardley, approaching 31, and he said: “It's a huge evening for the pair of us. It is undoubtedly the largest contest of my professional life and the greatest challenge I've faced. But every time I step up I excel under pressure. Saturday will be no different. The separation between Parker's level and my perceived standing has been a common theme during my entire career.

“He's a seasoned veteran for a long time, with a lot of fights on his record. By no means is he an senior boxer but he has been in the boxing world for a significant time and had numerous grueling matches. I too have faced intense battles and I realize they cause wear and tear. He has been in a far greater number of those than me.”

But the general belief is that Parker should prove too seasoned, and too skilful, for Wardley. He is favored to secure a bruising battle with the conviction that he is the prime candidate for the champion Usyk – still the world’s best heavyweight by a comfortable distance.
