Patients Coming Off Anti-Obesity Jabs Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

New research indicates that people who come off popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.

Research printed in a major health publication shows that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People using such medications need to be cognizant of the potential of quick weight regain when the therapy ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a return to original weight within about a year and a half.

Comparing Treatments

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

The team point out that people who shed pounds through dieting usually experience a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Experts believe the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the amplified rebound.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Issue?

The NHS recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have discontinued the medication describe a sudden return of hunger.

"It was like a switch flipping and you're instantly ravenous," recalled a patient.

The struggle is exacerbated if users have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Significant Interest

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers caution that while the jabs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss relies on combined lifestyle support.
