Preparations for Putin-Trump Meeting Delayed Days Following Hungarian Capital Talks Announced

Currently exist "no plans" for American leader President Trump to meet Russia's Putin "anytime soon", a White House official has declared.

Last Thursday the US president indicated he and the Russian president would meet in Hungary's capital within two weeks to examine the ongoing hostilities.

A preparatory meeting between US Secretary of State Secretary Rubio and his opposite number Foreign Minister Lavrov was due to be held this week - but the administration stated the two had had a "productive" call and that a face-to-face session was not "necessary".

The White House did not share additional specifics on why the talks had been postponed.

Earlier Events

The US president had discussed a Hungarian meeting during a call with the Russian leader, a day before hosting Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office.

Certain accounts claimed his talks with Zelensky had been a "heated exchange", with those familiar indicating Trump had pushed him to give up significant territories of eastern Ukraine as part of a settlement with Moscow.

However, on Monday Trump embraced a truce plan supported by Kyiv and EU officials to freeze the conflict on the existing battle lines.

"Freeze the lines in its current state," he stated.

Moscow has consistently objected against freezing the existing front lines.

The Russian government was only interested in "enduring stability", Russia's foreign minister said on this week, indicating that pausing conflict would simply constitute a temporary ceasefire.

Diplomatic Positions

The "fundamental issues" of the war required resolution, Lavrov said, using Russian diplomatic language for a series of comprehensive conditions that encompass the acknowledgment of complete Moscow control over the eastern region as well as the disarmament of the country – a non-starter for Kyiv and its European partners.

Zelensky said discussions about the battle positions were the "commencement of dialogue" but that Russia was "doing everything" to prevent dialogue.

He also said the exclusive issue that could make Moscow "become engaged" was that of the delivery of distance-capable munitions to Ukraine.

Military Considerations

The Russian president's unscheduled call with the US leader recently occurred before speculation that the US was planning to provide extended-range cruise missiles to Ukrainian forces that could potentially strike inside Russia.

Zelensky said it was the missile discussion that had forced Russia to engage in discussion. The conversation concerning the missiles had turned out to be a "significant input" in international relations", he remarked.
