Supply Lines in the Sea: A Review of Food Delivery – A Gripping Journey Along Supply Lines in the Maritime Dispute.
Director Baby Ruth Villarama and her team board a variety of sea craft to record the persistent dispute and its impacts between the Philippines and the People's Republic of China over authority of the recently named West Philippine Sea. This maritime region, recognized by most nations outside of China as part of the Philippines' exclusive economic zone, has seen escalating incursions by Chinese maritime forces. Among them are fishing boats, most notably China's coast guard vessels that have been accused of harassing, intentionally hit, and attempted to board Filipino boats amid the broader sovereignty dispute.
Portions of the film are highly charged, yet mostly the conflict manifests as a tense game of naval posturing. Personnel on opposing vessels exchange heated declarations, peppered with technical legalese, practicing a unique radio diplomacy.
Resupply at the Front Lines
The film's title points to the ongoing mission by the Philippine army to transport essentials to tiny outposts in the West Philippine Sea where soldiers hold the line for long, solitary stretches. These outposts are often mere dollops of sand in the shallows, about the size of a soccer field, approachable just with speeding rubber dinghies.
The voyages are undoubtedly scary for the young animals on board, which are shipped with canned goods and other necessities. Viewers see the creatures seeking for secure footing as the boats hurtle across the choppy waves.
The Fishermen's Plight
In another segment local fishermen around the more populated Scarborough Shoal, who voice complaints over decreasing fish hauls attributed to the sheer number of Chinese fishing boats in their traditional fishing grounds.
A Compelling Subject, Imperfect Execution
In terms of filmmaking, the documentary is slightly weakened by a at times meandering narrative approach and a soundtrack that can feel overly tacky, amplifying the emotional beats. Yet, it stands as a fascinating exploration of a critical subject that is rarely covered outside its region.
