The Details Known About the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Shooting

At least 16 people perished and more than 40 sustained injuries when attackers shot at a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an incident local authorities are describing as a terrorist attack.

According to the most recent information, officials have confirmed the death toll is 16, which includes one of the suspected attackers. Moreover, 42 wounded individuals were transported to medical facilities.

The victims are yet to be publicly named, but authorities state their ages range from 10 and 87 years old.

Listed are the victims who are known to date.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he worked as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member asked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She recounted the events leading up to the shooting, stating they had been standing together when the gunfire started. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having faced immense hardship in their childhood. They had later moved to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Officially, a senior official expressed that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the statement continued.

One Child

A child who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was also killed during the attack, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospitals, many remain under care, with five in a critical state. The injured include two police officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Called a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he recounted the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the attack. He described he heard “a large number” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
