The Legendary Williams, Awarded Special Entry for First Melbourne Major in Half a Decade.
A seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has secured a special invitation for the first Grand Slam of the year, commencing on the 18th of January in Melbourne.
Historic Return to the Australian Courts
The event organizers announced on the weekend that the forty-five-year-old legend will make a return at Melbourne Park a staggering 28 years after her first appearance. Back in 1998, she defeated her sibling Serena in the second round before bowing out in the last eight to fellow American Lindsay Davenport.
Gearing Up for the Summer Swing
The tennis star had previously revealed in the month of November her intention to compete in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she also received a wild card, two weeks before the Australian Open. Organizers noted that Williams is also entered to play a tournament in Hobart, Australia a following week, just before the action begins at the main venue.
Her most recent visit in Melbourne was in 2021, and she has finished runner-up in the singles competition on two separate instances, losing to Serena in the finals of 2003 as well as 2017.
"I am thrilled to return in the country and eagerly anticipating competing during the summer season," Williams stated. "I’ve had so many incredible memories there, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to go back to a venue that has been so significant to my career."
By the Numbers
Williams' career statistics at Melbourne Park stands at an impressive 54 victories and 21 losses. This year will mark the twenty-second occasion she has competed in the primary tournament field.
Setting a Fresh Benchmark
The tournament pointed out that Williams is set to become the oldest woman to take part in an Open's main draw, eclipsing the mark previously held by Japan’s Kimiko Date, who was forty-four when she was defeated in the opening round at the venue in 2015.
Recent Life Event
In late December, Williams wed Denmark-born actor and model Andrea Preti in Florida's Palm Beach.
