"Any idea when you're speaking to the band?" a message reads. "I wanted to ask if I can be their fourth member."

There is only a key snag: The author likewise desires to be the Haims' fourth member. And we're far from alone. A host of famous fans have publicly petitioned for the position.

The evidence suggests something is going on. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana started their path performing shows at local delicatessens with their family. Presently, they stand as repeated Grammy Award hopefuls.

In the tradition of the greatest groups, they're a inseparable trio. Their music videos frequently depict them walking in unison down the roads of Los Angeles. During performances, they jam with such boundless exuberance you inevitably think, "I wish to be involved in that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that audience members came up to us and said, 'After your show, I picked up a guitar'," says Alana, the most junior of the trio. "That's the greatest honor. That's an award in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can inspire people to form a group."

Historic Recognition

The group are connecting from a break, where they're resting up after an extensive tour in promoting their latest album, I Quit.

"I tune into the announcements every year, so it kind of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is called," explains Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this right or am I dreaming'?"

The significance of the accolade resonates with the sisters.

"We truly set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a major milestone," continues Alana. "Yet we're just appreciative for the women that inspired us."

Heartbreak and Humour

The project came out of a period of personal change. All three sisters were single, and the music captures that odd in-between place where you're glad to be free, but not quite ready to move on.

The lyrics track departures and partings. The sisters desire love, but not the specific love they've got. You can hear them working out in the moment who they are becoming.

"I adore description, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a personal statement. You have to consciously practice blocking the outside opinions and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Refinement of Music

That developed confidence required a fresh approach – more unpolished and immediate than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that began with the drums.

"Percussion is such a nuanced thing, and I am so passionate about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our biography," quips Alana. "Our motto is, our albums don't start until we find the right drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Laughter

The trio's candor fueled the album's marketing, where the sisters shared some of their romantic tales.

A former partner broke up with Este over a medical concern. Alana told a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"When you're going through these breakups, you just feel like there's no hope," explains Alana. "Therefore to be able to laugh at those stories and hear others tell you wilder stories, it's therapeutic."

A Secure Future

You can clearly sense a shift in the band. These days, Haim are more confident of their place in the rock pantheon.

They're top-billed acts, with hit albums and an international fan base.

However Haim will always be their top priority.

"Me and my siblings have been playing music since I was little," concludes Alana. "It feels as if nothing else that we were meant to do. And I'm really grateful we've made it and we're still making music."
