This Special Release Pokémon Card Aims to Be Super Effective On Speculators

To celebrate the launch of the fascinating new book Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology, a unique collaboration is underway. Pokémon's creators and the Natural History Museum will launch a pop-up shop stocked with exclusive merchandise. Enthusiasts can look forward to products like plush toys, art prints, and writing supplies all inspired by the institution's aesthetic. The big draw, however, is a specially made Pikachu card, given as a free bonus at the pop-up. The store will operate both on-site at the museum and its web counterpart between late January and mid-April.

Pokécology That Inspires the Collaboration

Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology is a much-awaited tome packed with stunning artwork depicting creatures in their wild environments. The concept is what a Pokémon Professor could produce once adventurers submit their data, alternatively what Charles Darwin could have sketched had the Galapagos were populated by flying-types instead of birds. A key appeal stems from the book's serious approach, treating Pokémon as a legitimate subject for study. Writer Yoshinari Yonehara together with illustrator Chihiro Kinoshita each possess doctorate degrees in ecology and behavioral science.

Why This Special Card Stand Out

It is common to issue special edition promos for major tournaments or brand collaborations. Many such promotional cards often feature the famous mouse Pokémon that acts as the franchise mascot. What distinguishes this latest museum card however, is the unusually large size. Although exact measurements have not been publicly disclosed, availability is guaranteed to be strictly limited, with fans able to get just one card with each transaction.

Curbing Speculator Activity

Per an official statement, some of the merchandise may also be available beyond the museum walls. But, broader availability is slated for select retailers in the UK. Critically, fans will not be able to purchase this promo via the online Pokémon Center. While reseller interest is inevitable, the setup suggests they will have a difficult time hoarding mass quantities on this occasion. For those unable to attend, consider the upcoming fossil-themed display headed to Chicago later this year.

"Every penny of sales from the museum store and its web shop, including Pokémon products, go toward the Natural History Museum’s charitable mission. This includes the research of 400 scientists dedicated to scientific inquiry and finding solutions to the global ecological crisis," it notes.
