Two Separate Cuba-bound Aid Ships Reported Missing following Departing Mexican Waters.
A large-scale search and recovery effort is actively in progress in the Caribbean Sea for a pair of lost sailing vessels carrying aid cargo en route from Mexico to Cuba.
Maritime Search and Rescue Missions Initiated
The Mexican government has dispatched naval assets and reconnaissance aircraft to find the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were had on board a minimum of nine total crew members, according to a navy statement.
The boats had been expected to reach Cuba's capital on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been no communication from them and no confirmation of their arrival, the navy said.
Context of Aid to the Island
The island nation has depended significantly on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over the past few weeks, as the nation endures widespread power outages across the country.
"Both crews and captains are experienced sailors, and the two ships are equipped with suitable safety systems and signalling equipment," a spokesperson for the convoy stated.
The nine crew members are citizens of France, Poland, the United States, and Cuba. Mexico said it has been in touch with coast guard agencies from those nations along with their diplomatic representatives.
"The group is co-operating fully with the authorities and are still optimistic in the ability of the crews to safely arrive in Havana," the official further stated.
Earlier Relief Mission
Previously that week, the Cuban authorities publicly celebrated and officially received a separate vessel that had delivered a significant amount of donated goods to the nation.
That vessel, called "a new Granma" following the name of the vessel in which Castro landed in Cuba to launch the armed struggle in the 1950s, brought solar panels, drugs, formula milk, cycles and provisions.
Wider Political Backdrop
Charity groups and individuals have primarily led initiatives to bring critical assistance to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, when a energy blockade on the country came into effect.
Global bodies have since raised alarms about "dire" supply shortages, with over 50,000 surgical procedures postponed in Cuba because of power shortages.
Foreign policy measures have been ramped up over the past months, with remarks from various leaders underscoring the delicate state of relations.
Responding to previous comments, a senior official from Cuba stated firmly that "the socialist system of Cuba is non-negotiable."
Indications suggest that early stages of talks were initiated, although their present status remains unclear.
The naval forces said it was committed to using every available asset at its reach to discover the sailboats and guarantee the well-being of the sailors.
To date, there has been silence on the lost ships by the government in Havana.
