The city's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to take up residence in the traditional Gracie Mansion, departing from the rent-stabilised apartment that was a central issue throughout his run for office.

A Traditional Abode

Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the mayoral home for nearly all New York City mayors since the post-war period.

However, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a central policy, did not confirm this decision promptly after his victory in November.

"This decision was based on the security of my family and the need to dedicating all of my focus on implementing the agenda for affordability the city's residents elected me on," the Mayor-Elect declared in a statement.

Leaving Astoria

He resided in Astoria, Queens, a district renowned for its abundance of immigrant communities and international dining.

"To my neighbors in Astoria: my gratitude for demonstrating the best of New York City," he noted.

"Even though I'm moving there, it will always live inside me and my work," he added.

Campaign Controversy

In his election campaign, Mamdani connected his key pledge – to freeze the rent – to his personal living arrangements.

However his critics, mainly former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for remaining in the apartment although he came from a well-known family.

A House Not Always Used

Not all mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, preferred to remain in his own townhouse on Manhattan's Upper East Side during his time in office, which concluded in 2012.

Instead, Bloomberg felt it should be a place for civic gatherings, and advocated for a major refurbishment of the historic mansion.

A Stately Residence

When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion sometime around his first day on 1 January, he will find himself in surroundings very different than his humble Astoria digs.

Adorned in cream-colored walls, forest green window covers, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure overlooking the East River.

Within, the first floor of the Federal-style mansion is furnished to reflect the home's historical period.

The property, which reportedly has several bedrooms, also includes enhanced security to secure the mayor and his family.

Supernatural Speculation

Past occupants have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.

Chirlane McCray, the partner of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that they experienced doors opening and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards creaked eerily.

Former Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "No matter what anyone says," he insisted in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."

Affordable Housing Lifeline

The apartment he is leaving is rent-stabilized, meaning the city sets limits on how much building managers can increase rent each year.

City residents consider these apartments valuable lifelines as the cost of housing exceeds the means of many residents.

Data indicated Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.

According to the real estate platform Zillow, the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
